Channel Tunnel customs and border checks

Chunnel.co.uk » Channel Tunnel customs and border checks

When travelling through the Channel Tunnel you must pass both UK and French customs controls. These checks apply to all passengers, regardless of whether you are travelling from England to France or back again. On this page you will find what to expect, what documents you need and how to prepare for a smooth crossing.

Channel Tunnel customs
All Eurotunnel passengers pass through both UK and French customs before boarding.

Advance Passenger Information (API)

Before you travel, you must submit Advance Passenger Information (API). This includes passport details for all passengers in your vehicle. API can be completed easily during your booking process. Without API, you will not be allowed to board.

  • One valid passport per passenger is required, ID cards are not accepted.
  • Make sure all documents are up to date before your trip.
  • Allow extra time at the terminal if you are travelling during peak holiday periods.

See more about ticket booking and requirements on our Eurotunnel tickets page.

What to expect at customs

At both Folkestone and Calais, you will drive through customs control before boarding the shuttle:

  • UK border: checks when leaving the UK (or re-entering). Officials may ask about your journey, inspect documents and check for restricted items.
  • French border: passport control and customs checks before entering the EU. Here officials may also ask about goods, alcohol or tobacco.

Checks are usually quick, but during busy travel days queues can form. Make sure you have all paperwork ready.

What you can and cannot bring

Customs rules apply to certain goods, including alcohol, tobacco, food and fuel.

  • Personal luggage: No weight limit. Pack freely as long as items are for personal use. See our Eurotunnel luggage page.
  • Alcohol and tobacco: Duty-free limits apply when travelling from the EU to the UK. Carrying above the allowance may lead to questions or duties.
  • Food and plants: Some fresh food, meat, dairy and plants are restricted. Check before travelling.
  • Fuel: Maximum 30 litres of spare fuel allowed in jerrycans.
  • Fireworks, firearms or dangerous goods: Not permitted, except with specific licences. See our Eurotunnel luggage rules for details.

Pets and customs

If you are travelling with a dog or cat, you must follow the Pet Travel Scheme. Pets need:

  • A valid pet passport or Animal Health Certificate.
  • Microchip and rabies vaccination.
  • Tapeworm treatment for dogs travelling into the UK.

More details can be found on our Eurotunnel pets page.

Freight and commercial goods

If you are carrying commercial goods or driving a van for business, you cannot use the passenger service. Instead, you must travel via Eurotunnel Freight. Customs paperwork for goods must also be in order before travel.

Tips for a smooth border crossing

  • Complete API before you arrive at the terminal.
  • Keep passports ready for all passengers.
  • Declare gas bottles, firearms or any restricted items.
  • Arrive at least one hour before your booked departure.
  • During peak times, allow extra time for customs queues.
